Always Tired but Labs Are Normal?

What Is Adrenal Fatigue?

If you are always tired but your labs come back normal, you are not imagining it. There is a name for what you might be experiencing and it lives in a gap between what conventional medicine tests for and what your body is actually going through.

Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys and they produce cortisol, which is the hormone your body uses to manage stress. When your body is stuck in fight or flight mode for a long time, whether from chronic illness, emotional stress, or both, your adrenals can get burned out. They stop producing cortisol the way they should and your body pays for it.

That is what happened to me. For a long time I thought my exhaustion was just part of being chronically ill. Come to find out my cortisol was tanked and my adrenals were burned out from years of my body running on overdrive. Once we identified that, everything about why I was not recovering started to make sense.

I want to be upfront about something. Adrenal fatigue is not a diagnosis that conventional medicine recognizes. Most doctors will not test for it and some will tell you it does not exist. But it was a very real part of my experience and I have heard the same thing from a ton of people dealing with chronic illness. My cortisol levels were measurably low. My symptoms lined up. And once I started addressing it, things changed.

If you are exhausted in a way that sleep does not fix, if your body feels like it cannot recover no matter what you do, if you have been told your labs are normal but you know something is off, this might be worth looking into.

The Refine & Realign: Understanding Cortisol & Adrenal Fatigue companion guide walks through what cortisol does in your body, what happens when it stays too high or drops too low, and what helped me start turning things around.
